Water Sensitive Limestone
Water Sensitive Limestone Limestone due to the fact that the problem I am discussing is relevant to both of these stones which can more accurately be described under this banner. On these trips I have seen numerous jobs where the colour of the limestone was bleached out as well as the polished destroyed. In almost all of these cases the prognosis by locals was that the stone was stained and therefore the problem could be cleaned.
Marble and Limestone Countertop Maintenance
Marble and Limestone have been used as countertop or work surfaces for hundreds if not thousands of years. However in recent times there has been a renaissance in their use. They have become fashionable. However it seems many clients are totally unaware of how they perform in this environment and how they should be maintained.
Mildew, Moss and Sealers
Porous materials such as terracotta and natural stone are well documented as being materials that suffer commonly from contamination of moss and mildew. Sealers are recommended and installed to help resist the formation of such spores however how they work and what they do is most always misunderstood. Below is a letter I wrote in support of an installer whose client insisted that the applied sealer was not performing because their limestone still exhibited areas of mildew and was delaminating.
Anti Bacterial
The rationale for the poor cleaning method was that it replicated how most people clean their bench. The test then measured how many bacteria were left after the cleaning procedure.
